General Frequently Asked Questions about MonitorIT

MonitorIT brings together all the people with an interest in the proper functioning of the project in one and the same team!
Its primary goal is to help spread and organize the Devops culture within your organization.

For managers, by giving them more visibility on the health of applications and the mobilization of teams.
For Devops, by providing them with a simple, fun and effective way to do proactive monitoring and highlight their work. Indeed, MonitorIT organizes a ritual by notifying each member of the team in turn to carry out a proactive monitoring of his project.

Monitoring is often the “poor relation” of an application's life cycle.
Through notifications, MonitorIT reminds your team members that proactive daily error checking allows to faster incident resolution. In addition, by exploring the logs, they will be able to see the changes to be made in the writing of error traces.

MonitorIT is a mobile application available on the iOS and Android stores.

The spirit being is to monitor in 15 minutes to advance the cause without trying to be exhaustive.
When it is your turn to do the proactive monitoring, you are notified by the application. All you have to do is follow the procedure defined by your project to make sure that everything is going well and, if necessary, launch remedial actions by discussing with the team.

You can view the status of your applications using a color code:

  • Green: everything is fine, but that does not prevent proactive monitoring!
  • Red: at least one critical probe is released
  • Black: we have no more news from your application

Four user profiles are available:

  • StakeHolder: people who are not involved in the Devops ritual but who are interested in the proper functioning of the project
  • TechLead: the person in charge of the Devops ritual and the project
  • TeamMember: direct member of the team project under the responsibility of the TechLead
  • CommunityMember: participates in the Devops ritual without being part of the project. He usually works on partner projects. This role is popular at Edifixio because it encourages inter-project sharing of best practices.

Of course, MonitorIT adapts to your organization. For example, it is common for a person to be a member of several teams with different rituals.

You can both group several projects (micro-services) under the aegis of the same team and a shared ritual.
These projects are then centralized under the responsibility of the same team and the same ritual.

At any time you can exchange your monitoring day with another member of your team if you both agree. If you have not done your monitoring, an SOS will automatically go to the other members of your team so that they come to lend you a hand.

MonitorIT defines different status of probes but it is also up to you to make sense of it.

  • Critical: general alert a major problem is in progress to be resolved immediately
  • Issue: a major problem must be resolved during business hours
  • Warning: a problem is coming, you must be concerned
  • Quarantine: faulty probe set aside for a given time. For example when a mitigation action is in progress. This allows you to focus only on new problems
  • Expired: no news from the probe, this means that we are failing in our duty of visibility and may be the announcer of a more serious problem
  • Ok: everything is fine
